U18G Benicia Arsenal FC Wins Norcal Gold State Cup Final

U18G (Gold State) Cup Championship

The Benicia Arsenal FC U18 Girls soccer team travelled to Modesto on Saturday to compete in the NorCal Premier (Gold) State Cup final vs Mission Valley Utd of Freemont.

On a wind swept Modesto turf field the Arsenal girls took advantage of the early pressure and gained a 1-0 lead through an in swinging corner from Michelle Minahen who’s excellent delivery glanced off an MVU defender and into her own net. A dominant Arsenal team captained by Jenna Rogenski, Kimberley Fiori and Emily Wolfe then wrapped up an impressive first half display with the 32nd goal of the season from Michelle Li who curled in an effort from outside the penalty area to make it 2-0.

After the break Arsenal dealt with the pressure from a team eager to close the gap and after controversially having the MVU team awarded a penalty kick for what appeared to the referee to be a trip inside the box it was up to goalkeeper Alexa Torres to maintain the Arsenal lead. She did so with an excellent diving save to her left hand side.

Tiredness crept into a group who had been balancing Varsity high school soccer and club commitments to maintain an excellent end to their season which has seen four tournament wins (including the Nike Mt Hood challenge in Portland) as well as taking the League championship to add to this State Cup final victory.

Impressive displays by Torres , Ellen Wolfhart  , Li and Rogenski along with an incredibly dedicated nineteen player roster  contributed towards a perfect 2-0 score line and successful season that also had the team remain undefeated through their league campaign.
